Housing Works

Housing Works is one of my favorite thrift shops in the city. Especially the one in Park Slope,Brooklyn. I always find great items in the store for amazing prices. What I love most about Housing Works is that it is a non-profit organization fighting  AIDS and homelessness.  Asides from the thrift shops, they also have a book store and cafe in SoHo,NYC along with a few other enterprises.

I stopped by Housing Works today while strolling through the neighborhood with Gabby. Within five minutes Gabby got lucky and found a few awesome items for herself. For $10 we got a little tea set that comes in an adorable wicker case, a chutes and ladders game and last but not least a trunk filled with dress up clothes from The Wizard of Oz!

Walmart’s New “Great for you” Icon

Walmart has been working hard on providing people with healthier food.  This past Tuesday Walmart announced their new Great for you” icon to help customers instantly identify food options that are better for them. The new icon will appear on Great Value and Marketside items, as well as fresh and packaged fruits and vegetables, at Walmart stores nationwide this spring.

Obesity is a serious problem in the USA. The obesity rate has gone up so much over the years. First Lady Michelle Obama  has made healthy eating and reducing childhood obesity a priority.Walmart already lowered the price of their fruits and vegetables in early 2011.The new icon to label healthy foods will be another way to try and live a healthier lifestyle.

“Today’s announcement by Walmart is yet another step toward ensuring that our kids are given the chance to grow up healthy,” said First Lady Michelle Obama. “Just over a year ago, Walmart committed to save shoppers a billion dollars in their cost of fruits and vegetables and the fact that Walmart exceeded this number is a real accomplishment and a milestone in our efforts to support families eating better. In addition, the healthy seal will be another tool for parents to identify the best products for their kids. Giving parents the information they need to make healthy choices is a key piece of solving childhood obesity.”

I’m glad Walmart is putting so much effort into providing consumers with better and healthier food options. As a mom I want Gabby to eat things that are good and healthy for her. Showing children healthy eating habits at a young age is important! I love that Walmart is very affordable compared to other places. Eating healthy shouldn’t burn a hole through your wallet!

What do you think of Walmart’s new “Great For You” icon??
